Private Blog Networks (PBN) are said to be an operationally tactical network of websites owned and run by a single entity to influence their search engine ranking. Websites that are part of a PBN are actually created such that they level up to that of a true independent website; their main business is to host backlinks pointing to a target site. PBNs, obviously, are in the black-hat SEO definition, and they are considered a violation of search engine policy because they try to inflate a site’s backlink profile. Search engines such as Google are actively probing for PBN affiliated websites and are penalizing them. There are numerous implications, and some of them are the immediate loss of search engine ranking, de-indexing, or even removal from the search results. Ethical SEO involves creating high quality and relevant content and then organically earning backlinks through authentic engagement and outreach, as opposed to manipulative tactics such as PBNs.
