Short-tail keywords represent highly generalised terms with a tendency to be one word or, at most, two words long. These general terms fall in the class of high-volume keywords, as many searches will be done using these keywords. They face high competition from many sites targeting them. Short-tail keywords are less specific than long-tail keywords-they are used to refer to a broad subject or category. Short-tail keywords can drive significant traffic, but they may not do so as differentiated a lead, as their search intention becomes far too general. Sometimes, these short-tail keywords may be used as mother terms to derive other more relevant, longer-tailed keywords.
