Your ABN, step by step

What an ABN is and who needs one

An Australian Business Number (ABN) is an 11-digit identifier for your business, issued and managed by the Australian Business Register (ABR). You need one if you are carrying on an enterprise in Australia — running a business, contracting, or operating as a sole trader. It lets you invoice properly, register for GST, avoid having tax withheld at the top rate, and deal with other businesses and the ATO.

Before you start: what you’ll need

Applying is quicker if you have your details ready:

Your tax file number (TFN) and those of any associates.

Your business structure (sole trader, partnership, company or trust).

Details of your business activity and start date.

Your contact and location details.

If you have registered a company, your ACN or ARBN.

Step-by-step: applying for your ABN

Go to the Australian Business Register at abr.gov.au and choose to apply for an ABN. The official application is free — you do not need to pay a third party.

Confirm your eligibility and structure. The form checks that you are entitled to an ABN and asks how your business is set up.

Enter your details. Provide your identity information, TFN, business activity, start date and contact details.

Review and submit. Check everything is accurate — errors slow things down.

Receive your ABN. If your identity and details can be verified, you often get your ABN straight away. If the ABR needs to review anything, it can take up to 28 days, and they will contact you if more information is required.

Watch out for third-party fee sites

Applying directly through the ABR is free. Some private sites charge a fee to lodge the same application on your behalf. There is nothing illegal about that, but you are paying for a form you can complete yourself at no cost. Always check you are on the official abr.gov.au site.

What to do after you get your ABN

An ABN is a starting line, not a finish line. Once you have it, you may need to register a business name with ASIC (if you trade under a name that is not your own), register for GST if your turnover meets the threshold [VERIFY current fee/threshold], set up business banking, and — critically — get online. Customers now find and vet businesses on the web and through AI assistants before they ever call. A simple, professional website and a Google Business Profile turn your new ABN into actual enquiries.

Yes. Applying directly through the Australian Business Register at abr.gov.au is free. Be cautious of third-party websites that charge a fee to lodge the application for you — it is the same form you can complete yourself at no cost. Always confirm you are on the official ABR site.
Often it is immediate. If the ABR can verify your identity and details during the online application, you receive your ABN straight away. If something needs manual review, it can take up to 28 days, and the ABR will contact you if they need more information to process your application.
If you are carrying on an enterprise as a sole trader, you generally need an ABN to invoice clients properly and avoid tax being withheld at the top rate. Hobby income is different. If you are unsure whether your activity counts as an enterprise, check the ABR guidance or speak to an accountant.
Typically an ABN, a business name if you trade under one, business banking, and a professional way for customers to find and contact you. That last part matters more than ever — a clear website and Google Business Profile turn your registration into real enquiries.
