What an SEO freelancer Sydney charges, and what you get
Sydney has a deep pool of freelance SEO specialists, many of them ex-agency, and the good ones are very good. Expect $60 to $150 an hour, or a retainer of roughly $500 to $1,500 a month. For that you usually get one experienced person doing the keyword research, the on-page changes and the monthly report themselves. They know your account intimately and they answer the phone.
The trade-offs are capacity and coverage. One person cannot write four articles, fix a Core Web Vitals problem, run an outreach campaign and rebuild your Google Business Profile in the same month, so work queues. When they take a holiday or land a bigger client, your account waits. Copywriting, development and design are usually subcontracted or left to you. Be cautious below about $300 a month: at that price the deliverable is generally a templated report rather than changes to your site.
What an SEO agency in Sydney costs, and what you get
Agencies in Sydney typically charge $750 to $3,000 a month for small and medium businesses, with larger or more competitive programmes running to about $5,000. The range mostly reflects how much actually gets done each month: how many pages are optimised or written, whether technical fixes are implemented or merely recommended, whether links are built, and how often you speak to someone.
What you are buying beyond the hours is continuity and breadth. A writer, a developer and an SEO working on the same account; work that continues when one of them is away; and, in a good agency, reporting on enquiries rather than rankings alone. The trade-offs are cost and distance. Cheaper agencies run accounts on a production line, so ask who will actually touch your site and how often you will hear from them.

When a freelancer is the right call
You run one location, you can supply content or edit the site yourself, your budget is under $1,000 a month, and you want to talk to the person doing the work. A freelancer who has ranked businesses like yours in suburbs like yours will often outperform a mid-tier agency at the same price, because nothing is lost in the handover. Check that they will show you the actual changes each month, that you own every account, and that they have two current clients you can call.
When an agency is the right call
You need pages written and built, not just recommended. You want SEO running next to Google Ads or a website rebuild without three suppliers arguing about whose fault a slow page is. You cannot afford the account to pause for a month. Or you are in a competitive Sydney market where the businesses above you publish content, fix technical issues and earn links every month, and one person cannot match that output. Our own
SEO packages are built for that middle ground: a $240 one-off on-page tune-up if you want to test us on six pages, Local at $750 a month for ten keywords, Growth at $1,500 for twenty with content and links included, and Authority from $2,500 for forty or more across multiple locations. All published, all ex GST, all month to month, and you keep every account.
Six questions to ask either of them
What will you change on my site this month, and can I see it?
Who does the work, and who do I speak to?
Do I own the content, the accounts and the data if we stop?
How do you report enquiries, not just rankings?
What does month three look like, and what does month twelve look like?
Can I call two current clients?
Whoever you ask, walk away from anyone who guarantees a ranking. Nobody controls Google, and the guarantee usually comes attached to a keyword nobody searches for. See our
SEO service for how we report, and
