“Ranking” in ChatGPT isn’t ranking — it’s being cited
ChatGPT does not produce a ranked list of ten links. It generates an answer, and when it uses live browsing or search, it draws on sources it deems relevant and trustworthy, often citing a few of them. So the goal is not a position; it is to be one of the sources the model reads, trusts, and names. Everything below is about earning that citation.
Models reward content that answers the question quickly and cleanly. On every important page, put a short, self-contained answer near the top — a couple of sentences a model could lift verbatim and have it still make sense. Then expand with detail underneath. If your answer is buried under marketing preamble, it is far less likely to be extracted.
Use a logical heading hierarchy, short paragraphs, and lists where they genuinely help. Break complex topics into clearly labelled sections. This makes it easy for a model to find and pull the exact piece that answers a user’s question, rather than wading through a wall of text.
Schema markup — FAQPage, Article, Organization — gives machines an explicit description of your content and your business. It reinforces what the page is about and who published it, which helps both search engines and AI browsing tools understand and attribute your material.
AI systems weigh trust heavily. Strengthen it with named authors and real credentials, clear business details (name, address, phone, ABN), consistent listings across directories, and credible mentions on reputable sites. For WebGlobals, that means our founder Ashish Pahil is named as author, and our Parramatta details appear consistently everywhere.
If your services, location or claims differ between your website, your Google Business Profile and directories, you send mixed signals. Models — and search engines — trust consistent, corroborated information. Tidy up your listings so every source tells the same story.
Being specific and local helps. A page that answers “how much does a small business website cost in Australia” with clear AUD figures and AU context is more useful — and more citable — than a generic global answer. Specificity is a feature, not a limitation.
