Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is the practice of shaping your online content so generative AI models — ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity — represent and recommend your brand accurately in their responses. Where SEO targets search rankings, GEO targets what the AI says about you, using clear, structured, credible, consistently-published content across the web.

Generative AI tools do not just retrieve pages; they generate answers in their own words, drawing on everything they have learned about a topic. Generative Engine Optimisation is the discipline of influencing that output — making sure that when a model talks about your industry, or about your business by name, it does so accurately and favourably.
Think of it as reputation management for the AI era. You cannot edit a model’s response directly, but you can strongly influence it by controlling the quality, clarity and consistency of the information it learns from.
These three terms overlap, so it helps to separate them:
SEO optimises for ranking in a list of search results.
AEO optimises for being the direct answer in AI Overviews and featured snippets.
GEO optimises for how generative models describe and recommend your brand in free-form answers.
SEO and AEO are largely about a single page winning a slot. GEO is broader — it is about the overall picture of your business that a model assembles from many sources.
In our experience, the factors that move GEO are:
Consistency. Your name, services, location and claims should match everywhere — your site, your Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles. Contradictions confuse models.
Clarity of entity. Make it unmistakable who you are, what you do, and where you operate. Structured data and an “about” section that reads like a fact sheet help.
Credible mentions. Being referenced on reputable sites, review platforms and industry directories builds the trust a model factors in.
Substantiated claims. Vague or exaggerated marketing is a liability. Clear, honest, specific statements travel better through AI systems.
When an Australian customer asks an AI assistant to “recommend a digital agency in Parramatta” or “compare WordPress maintenance providers”, the model draws on its picture of the market. If your business is clearly defined, consistently listed and credibly mentioned, you are far more likely to be part of that answer. Because GEO is still emerging, businesses that get their house in order now build a lead that compounds.
Start with the basics that also serve SEO and AEO: a clear, accurate website; consistent business details everywhere; structured data; and honest, specific content. Then monitor how the major assistants actually describe your brand, and correct the source material where they get it wrong.
