SEO optimises your website to rank in a list of search results. Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) optimises your content to be the direct answer inside AI Overviews, featured snippets and assistants like ChatGPT. SEO earns the click; AEO earns the quote. Modern strategy needs both, working from the same well-structured content.

For two decades, search worked one way: you typed a query, you got ten links, you clicked one. SEO existed to win a spot on that list. That world still exists, but a second layer now sits on top of it. Google shows AI-generated Overviews, and a growing share of Australians ask AI assistants their questions directly and never see a results page at all.
That shift is what created Answer Engine Optimisation. AEO is not a rebrand of SEO — it is a different target. SEO aims for a ranking position. AEO aims to be the sentence the answer engine reads out.
The two disciplines share DNA but differ in emphasis:
SEO rewards depth and authority across a whole site. AEO rewards a clean, extractable answer on a specific question, backed by trust signals the engine can verify.
You do not choose one over the other. You build content that serves both. In practice that means:
Say a Sydney bookkeeper wants to be found for “do I need to register for GST”. A pure-SEO approach chases the ranking. An AEO-aware approach writes a two-sentence, accurate answer up top, marks it up as an FAQ, cites the ATO, and names the author. That same page can win the featured snippet, feed Google’s AI Overview, and get quoted by an assistant — three wins from one well-built page.
SEO targets keyword rankings, click-through rate and organic traffic. Success looks like page-one positions and visits.
AEO targets citations and inclusion in AI answers. Success looks like your business being named or quoted when someone asks a question — often without a click.
Lead with the answer. Put a tight, self-contained answer near the top of each page — 40 to 60 words that make sense on their own.
Structure for extraction. Use clear headings, short paragraphs and lists so both crawlers and models can pull the right piece.
Add schema. FAQPage, Article and Organization markup help engines understand and attribute your content.
Prove who you are. Named authors, real business details and consistent listings feed the E-E-A-T signals both Google and AI engines weigh.
Keep the SEO fundamentals. Speed, crawlability and internal linking still decide whether any of the above gets seen.
