A Google Business Profile is your free listing on Google Search and Maps. To optimise it, claim and verify the profile, complete every field, keep your name, address and phone accurate and consistent, choose the right categories, add quality photos, post updates, and gather and reply to reviews. A well-optimised profile drives local enquiries and calls.

Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the free listing that appears when someone searches for your business, or for services near them, on Google Search and Google Maps. For local Australian businesses it is one of the highest-impact free tools available: it can drive calls, direction requests and website visits directly, and it heavily influences whether you appear in the local “map pack” at the top of results.
Before anything else, claim the profile and complete Google’s verification. An unverified or unclaimed listing cannot be fully managed, and you want to be the one controlling your information — not leaving it to Google’s guesses or public suggestions.
Google rewards complete profiles. Fill in everything that applies:
Your Name, Address and Phone number (NAP) should match exactly across your Google Business Profile, your website and every directory listing. Inconsistent details — a different phone number here, an old address there — confuse both Google and customers and can weaken your local ranking. Consistency is one of the simplest wins in local SEO.
Active profiles perform better. Add clear, genuine photos of your premises, team and work. Use Google Posts to share updates, offers and news. Monitor the Q&A section and answer questions promptly. These signals show Google — and customers — that the business is real, active and engaged.
Reviews strongly influence both ranking and whether a customer chooses you. Ask happy customers for honest reviews, and reply to every review, positive or negative, professionally. A steady stream of genuine reviews and thoughtful responses builds trust. A note on compliance: never post fake reviews or incentivise misleading ones — under the Australian Consumer Law, misleading reviews can breach the law. Keep it honest.
A great profile works best alongside a fast, well-optimised website with consistent local information and local landing pages. The profile and the website reinforce each other: the profile captures the local searcher, the site converts them. Treating them as one connected local-SEO system is what turns visibility into enquiries.
